Voices of Guardians: Expectations and Challenges in Parental Controls
Before designing the UX for parental controls, we wanted to understand how parents currently use their parental control app, identify any issues they face, and discover their expectations. This approach allows us to create a representative persona and create a comprehensive parent user journey map for parental controls.
So, we interviewed 5 participants who were using parental control apps at that moment and got to understand their thoughts about the parental controls in detail.

Persona
We developed a persona that reflects common patterns observed across all participants during the interviews. This persona enables us to detail the parent's characteristics, their objectives for using parental controls, and their specific pain point

User journey map
Based on the persona, we created a user journey map so we can find any opportunity to provide better user experience and any hidden insight tha we hadn’t found yet in the user interviews through all the stages that users experience with parental controls.
This has helped us define a design goals for what and how we should design.

After more in-depth discussions about the screens we highlighted in the user flow that had the potential to achieve our design goals, we created high fidelity mockups to test with users.
(We were able to leverage our existing design component library to design quickly without any wireframes.)
Also checked the interactions of competitors’ app used by research participants to see if we could provide better interactions.

We evaluated through user interviews whether each idea could achieve the goal.
After explaining the four main ideas in detail to six participants recruited via Userzoom, we were able to hear in detail about their thoughts and the reasons behind them. Below are the results.

What Users Actually Expect vs. What We Think They Expect from Parental Controls
We expected that insights derived from hidden needs unknown to users could lead to the best solutions. However, it turned out that users didn't really want anything beyond making the core flows of parental controls simpler. This suggests that to deliver a better user experience, the focus should be on simplifying the core functionalities of the parental controls rather than adding new features that we believe valuable.
